PLEASE "1968/69"
CD edition
"Circus Days: A
Collection of Demos and Studio
Recordings 1967-69”
If
Sonny Rollins is the “Saxophone
Colossus” (and he is—I love Sonny
Rollins, a true
lion of jazz), surely Peter Dunton is a
top contender for Underground
Psychedelia Colossus: the Flies;
songwriting for Infinity; Neon Pearl
(1967); Gun (1969); Please (1967 and
1969), and of course, the band he
is best known for, one of the
most important underground
psychedelic bands to ever devise
trippy music and lay it down on tape, T2
(1969-1972). Psychedelic music lovers
love Peter Dunton’s music.
Madlib loves him too.
Dunton wrote an incredible amount of
material during the psychedelic era.
Like so many other musicians before
him, he moved on, thinking that
these recordings had no magic to them.
But nothing could have been less
true. Getting to hear the demo version
of the
monumental ‘Morning’ from T2’s
epochal “It’ll All Work Out in Boomland”
is a chill-maker if ever there was one.
Sink into a vision of a dreamy
psychedelic universe which seems to
have been Peter Dunton’s own on “Circus
Days," the third collection of
previously unreleased recordings
Dunton's late 1960’s British psychedelic
band, Please.
This release follows on from two other
superb albums of unreleased music by
Please, "1968-1969" and "Seeing
Stars”. The music on "Circus Days" can
easily be filed next to that of
contemporary bands like Blossom
Toes, Forever Amber, Tomorrow,
July, and an album which is now lauded
as one of the best of the era, "Odessey
And Oracle" by The Zombies. "Circus
Days" contains the previously mentioned
essential highlight — the original 1969
demo version of ‘Morning,' later to
appear on T2’s fabulous "It’ll All Work
Out in Boomland" album. Other earlier
demos including the classic 'Gently As
You Feel,’ and 'To Dream,’ a which
features additional female vocals. Last
but certainly not least, our Acme/Lion
"Circus Days” CD edition includes three
bonus tracks not on the LP version!!

Superb
and historic collection of 1968-1969 UK
psych—excellent somber, moody, minor key
demo material taken from original master
tapes and restored acetates. Trying to
follow the chronology of Peter Dunton’s
projects is difficult—these tracks were
recorded soon after the demise of Neon
Pearl (a band documented by our own
Acme/Lion CD release), around the time the
other original members of Please were
recording the Bulldog Breed album for
Deram (another band documented by an
Acme/Lion CD release), and just after
Dunton had left Gun to rejoin forces with
bass player Bernie Jinks, his co-leader in
phase one of Please for the band that
would eventually emerge as T2. Booklet
contains lyrics, and notes on the various
moves and disintegrations. This disc
features the original killer demo version
of 'No More White Horses' (a song that T2
would take into another dimension on their
epochal "It'll All Work Out In Boomland"
album, also available in our Acme/Lion
series), as well as 'Folder Man,' written
by Peter Dunton, which has been utilized
by Gnarls Barkley on 'The Odd Couple.'
Includes an alternate version of the
stunning Syd Barret-esque 'We Aim To
Please' as a CD-only bonus track.
"The songs 'No More White Horses' and
'Strange Ways' are absolutely stunning.
'No More White Horses' is, in my opinion,
as good as any song done by any band in
the 1960's. Right there with
'In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida,' 'Dazed And
Confused', or '21st Century Man.' Do
yourself a favor, hear it." —rateyourmusic

A third collection of previously
unreleased recordings by this late 1960’s
British psychedelic band fronted by Peter
Dunton, who went on to form the legendary
band T2. Dunton was a key figure in UK

role in many important bands. In brief,
here’s Dunton’s pedigree: Neon Pearl
(1967), Please (1967) and (1969), Flies
(1968), Gun (1969), T2 (1969-1972), and
Infinity (1969-70).
